Introduction to Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP)

Modified atmosphere packaging is a technique where the gas mix has been altered to extend the shelf life of the product being stored. Modified atmospheres enable fresh crops and minimally processed foods to maintain visual, textural, and nutritional appeal. The optimal gas mix needs to be matched to each crops specific respiration needs, and this can be done through gas flushing or permeable films. Kinzie Advanced Polymers stands behind the use of multi-layer permeable films, as gas flushing is an expense outdated technology that is being repurposed for other industries. Once our films are sealed they will diffuse any unwanted water vapor and gases through the layer of the film to create the perfect microclimate for your product.

Scope of this Guide

This guide is intended to provide a core list of the resources we have used since our research began in 2016. At Kinzie Advanced Polymers we are constantly researching film technology and the properties of the crops we store so we can continually innovate. The guide will focus mostly on the electronic resources we have come across that can be access for free online or in library databases. At the end I will list some important white papers and text that helped with our research efforts. The vast majority of these resources are from educational institutions or scientific organizations with only a couple being commercial websites. ANy website with outdated information or too much of a sales pitch for their products and services were not included.

Methods

The sites and articles referenced in this guide are a compilation of several years of web surfing while looking for useful sites to help in the answering of questions we came across in our research.
